[2] AGO General Orders No. 57, June 1, 1862, extended McClellan's Department of Virginia to include Wool's command at Fort Monroe, assigned Wool to command the Middle Department at Baltimore, and Dix to command at Fort Monroe and to report to McClellan for orders.
[3] Dix telegraphed Lincoln at 6:45 P. M., June 1, asking that his orders to report to McClellan be modified (DLC-RTL).
[4] On June 8, McDowell had been directed first to provide for the defense of Washington then to ``operate with the residue of your force as speedily as possible in the direction of Richmond, to co-operate with. . . McClellan. . . .'' (OR, I, XII, III, 354). On June 13, McClellan telegraphed Stanton to advise McDowell to come by water. (DLC-RTL).
