Annotation

[1]   AES, DNA RG 204, U.S. Pardon Attorney, A. 421. Lincoln's endorsement is written on the petition of Hermann Kirchner, restaurateur of Washington, D.C., June 5, 1862, for remission of a fine of twenty dollars imposed on charges of selling spirituous liquor to a soldier. Kirchner avowed that he had sent brandy to a wounded soldier in a neighboring house, but had never dispensed liquor to soldiers in his restaurant. Further endorsements indicate Bates' remission of the fine.
