Washington, D.C.,
Majr. Gen. McClellan June 7th 1862.
Your despatch about Chattanooga and Dalton was duly received and sent to Gen. Halleck. I have just received the following answer from him. We have Fort-Pillow, Randolph, and Memphis.
A LINCOLN
Annotation
[1] ALS, RPB. ``June 7th'' is not in Lincoln's handwriting. See Lincoln to Halleck, June 5, supra. Halleck's telegram of June 7 reported, ``Preparations for Chattanooga made five days ago & troops moved in that direction.'' (DLC-RTL).
