[1] AES, IHi. Lincoln's endorsement appears on a letter from Senator Ira Harris, June 3, 1862, asking an endorsement ordering appointment of John H. Nichols, Jr., as a second lieutenant in the army. Nichols was nominated second lieutenant in the First U.S. Cavalry on June 6, and was confirmed by the Senate on July 14, 1862.
