If the War Department or Major Gen. Halleck can assign Col. Woodruff to the command of a Brigade, without injustice to any other, I shall be gratified. A. LINCOLN
June 5. 1862.
Let Col. Woodruff be appointed a Brig. Genl. of vols.
June 9. 1862. A LINCOLN
Annotation
[1] AES, IHi. Lincoln's endorsements are written on a letter from John B. Temple, president of the Military Board, Frankfort, Kentucky, May 28, 1862, asking appointment of William E. Woodruff, formerly colonel of the Second Kentucky, as a brigadier general. While he was held a prisoner by the Confederates, Colonel Woodruff's place had been filled by another man. Although Woodruff was nominated on June 10, there is no record of his confirmation by the Senate.
