Annotation

[1]   AES, owned by Alfred M. Hellman, New York City. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from S. H. Swetland to Major General Wool, May 28, 1862, asking that ``Mrs. Bradley'' be assigned to some new field of labor, ``Mrs. Dix having rendered her former field obnoxious---one not controlled by her is desired. Any aid you may give will I think benefit the soldiery. . . .'' The letter also bears a recommendation of Mrs. Bradley, May 30, 1862, signed by Lieutenant Colonel William D. Whipple, chief of staff at Fort Monroe. Miss, not Mrs., Amy M. Bradley of Maine served during May, 1862, in the Hospital Transport Service at Fort Monroe. No further record of her differences with Miss Dorothea Dix has been found.
