Annotation
[1] ALS, RPB. McDowell's telegram to Stanton, received at 5:45 P. M., reads in part as follows: ``. . . Shields reported an accident on the railroad at Thorough-fare Gap which he feared could not be repaired under twenty-four hours. . . . I sent him the President's telegram and he reports he will make such arrangements that will enable him to be in Front Royal before 12 o'clock m. to-morrow, with his other two brigades within 4 miles of the town by the same hour. Since then the locomotive and force sent from here have repaired the break in the road. . . .'' (OR, I, XII, III, 277).
