[1]   Robert B. Warden, An Account of the Private Life and Public Services of Salmon Portland Chase (1874), p. 434. This note was in reply to a letter from Chase, May 16, 1862, ``Obliged to go to Philadelphia this afternoon I cannot confer with you as I wish in relation to the Military order of Maj. Gen. Hunter. . . . it seems to me of the highest importance. . . that this order be not revoked.'' (DLC-RTL). See Lincoln's proclamation of May 19, infra, revoking Hunter's order.
