Mr. Bingham has not been much obliged by appointments; so that I think the first PayMaster hereafter appointed in Ohio should be his man, named within. A. LINCOLN

[1] AES, DLC-Cameron Papers. Lincoln's endorsement is written on the envelope of a letter from Representative John A. Bingham of Ohio, November 10, 1861, recommending Alexander J. McDonall of Steubenville for a paymastership. No record has been found of McDonall's appointment.
