Annotation

[1]   ALS-P, ISLA. Adjutant General Lorenzo Thomas endorsed this letter on the same day, ``This officer is a 1st Lieut 18 Infantry. He was nominated as Assistant Quartermaster with the rank of Captain to fill an original Vacancy. He was rejected by the Senate, and the vacancy filled by another officer. There is now no vacancy in the Quartermasters Department, to which he could be re-nominated.'' Gardner had been rejected by the Senate of February 3, 1862. Lincoln's later endorsements of December 11 and 15, 1862, brought no results, but Gardner was promoted to captain June 30, 1863.
