Annotation

[1]   LS, RPB. This letter, in John Hay's handwriting but signed by Lincoln, is incorrectly dated May 18, 1862, in the Complete Works (NH, VII, 170). Charles L. Flint was secretary of the Massachusetts State Board of Agriculture and became an authority on agricultural subjects, later serving as president of Massachusetts Agricultural College.
