For special reasons, let George F. Gardiner, now a Major of Volunteers, be appointed a Second Lieutenant in the Regular Army.
May 12, 1862. A. LINCOLN
Annotation
[1] AES, IHi. Lincoln's endorsement appears on a letter from Lorenzo Thomas, March 28, 1862:
``The letters of application in the case of Major Geo. F. Gardiner, 7th Conn. Vols., recommending him for an appointment as Captain in the regular army, have been received and submitted to the Secretary of War, and I am instructed by him to say that there is now no vacancy of that grade in the Army. There are a few vacancies, however, of the grade of 2nd Lieutenant, and if Major Gardiner is not yet too old he could be appointed to one of these.
``He will please forward a statement of his age, should he desire the appointment. . . .''
Nominated second lieutenant in the First U.S. Artillery, Gardiner failed to be confirmed by the Senate, but was promoted to lieutenant colonel of the Seventh Connecticut Volunteers on June 20, 1862.
