Memorandum:
Appointment of Richard C. Vaughan1Jump to section
The head of any Department, or Bureau, will oblige me, by obliging Attorney General Bates in the matter mentioned within.
Nov. 9, 1861. A. LINCOLN.
Annotation
[1] Thomas F. Madigan Catalog, First Issue, 1937, No. 158. According to the catalog description, Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from Edward Bates recommending an appointment for Colonel Vaughan. Richard C. Vaughan of Lexington, Missouri, was Bates' friend, but seems to have received no federal appointment; his son John M. Vaughan, however, was appointed by Bates himself to a clerkship in the attorney general's office.
