Gurley addressed to ``Mr. Hay, Private Secretary of the President,'' April 28, 1862, calling attention to the fact that the recommendation for appointment of Colonel A. E. Jones (see Lincoln to Stanton, April 7, supra) had been misplaced, and requesting that the appointment be made as soon as possible. Colonel A. E. Jones was nominated brigadier general of Volunteers on April 29, but failed to get confirmation by the Senate when his nomination was tabled on July 16, 1862.
