[1]   AES, owned by Dale Carnegie, New York City. Lincoln's endorsement has been removed from attendant papers in the War Records, but immediately following Lincoln's endorsement is a concurring endorsement by Isaac N.Arnold which provides a clue. The Register of letters received by the Secretary

of War (DNA WR RG 107 P 61) lists a letter of this date, ``Endorsed and submitted for Col. William S. Johnston, Jr. Endorsed by I. N. Arnold, introducing and recommending Lt. William Goldie who comes to settle account of Mechic. Fusilliers.'' William Goldie served as first lieutenant and quartermaster of the Fifty-sixth Illinois Infantry, October 1, 1861---February 1, 1862. The ``Mechanic Fusilliers'' formed a portion of this regiment. Goldie was nominated captain and quartermaster of Volunteers, May 2, 1862, and confirmed by the Senate on June 30.
