Annotation

[1]   AES, NHi. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from Milton S. Latham, April 26, 1862, requesting that authority be given ``to Brigham Young in Salt Lake City to raise, arm & equip one hundred men for ninety days service to be used in protecting the property of the Telegraph & overland mail companies'' against hostile Indians until ``our own troops can reach the point where they are so much needed.'' Adjutant General Lorenzo Thomas issued the authorization to Brigham Young on April 28, 1862 (OR, III, II, 27).
