To His Majesty Dom Luiz I,

King of Portugal,

&c., &c., &c.

Great and Good Friend: I have received the letter which Your Majesty was pleased to address to me on the 7th. of January, last, conveying the melancholy tidings of the decease of His Royal Highness the Most Serene Infante Dom Joao [sic], Your Majesty's beloved brother.

I participate in the grief occasioned by this sad event and offer to your Majesty and to your royal household my sincere condolence.

May God have Your Majesty always in His safe and holy keeping! Your Good Friend, ABRAHAM LINCOLN
