[1]   AES, DNA IR RG 241, Patent No. 35, 311. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a note from Senator Benjamin F. Wade requesting Commissioner of Patents David P. Holloway to give an early examination to an application for a patent filed on April 23, by William F. Goodwin of Powhatan, Ohio. Goodwin's patent, described as an ``Improvement in Breech-loading Ordnance,'' was issued on May 8, 1862.
