Annotation

[1]   ES, ORB. The endorsement in John Hay's hand but signed by Lincoln, is written on a letter from Henry F. Meyer to Lincoln, April 8, 1862. The date in indistinct but appears to be April 18. The petition and documents attached show that the case had already gone to Stanton, and that no action had been taken. Meyer, an architect and civil engineer, was a member of the Engineer Corps of the Fifth New York Militia, who at the end of a three months' enlistment in the spring of 1861, had been briefly employed by the Coastal Survey and had then returned to New York City to organize as captain a company in a new regiment. Being attacked and seriously wounded one night by unidentified assailants in Central Park, Meyer was confined to a hospital for a long time. Upon his release, he found himself mustered out of service. His petition was for back pay and expenses for recruiting his company.
