April 17, 1862.

Annotation

[1]   AES, owned by Dale Carnegie, New York City. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from Major General John C. Fremont to Senator Samuel C. Pomeroy, April 14, 1862, asking his influence to have D. Henry Burtnete appointed to Fremont's staff. Burtnete, who had been dismissed as lieutenant colonel of the Second New York Artillery on December 9, 1861, was appointed major and assistant aide-de-camp on Fremont's staff, June 10, 1862, but was dismissed again on November 25, 1862, for absence without leave, breach of arrest, and conduct unbecoming an officer.
