I shall be very much obliged, if Mr. Ellsworth can be assigned to duty where the work will be lighter. A. LINCOLN

April 16, 1862.

Annotation

[1]   AES, Perke, Bernet, Feb. 17, 1970. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from First Lieutenant Thomas G. Baylor at Fort Monroe Arsenal to General Ripley, April 15, 1862, asking that Ephraim D. Ellsworth, assigned to the Arsenal as military storekeeper, be relieved because of health. The father of Elmer E. Ellsworth remained in government employment until he was retired on a pension.
