Respectfully submitted to the Secretary of War, with the remark that Mr. Blair says the writer's word is good to the utmost hair's-breadth for what he says A. LINCOLN

Annotation

[1]   AES, RPB. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from Major Robert Allen, quartermaster at St. Louis, to Montgomery Blair, April 4, 1862, requesting aid in getting an appointment as brigadier general. ``The rank to which I attached no value a little while ago has become desirable by the change in the geography of the Department since it takes in Col. [Thomas] Swords who ranks me and I become subordinate to him.'' Allen's appointment as brigadier general of Volunteers was confirmed by the Senate on June 11, 1862.
