Mr. Charles C. Lathrop, bearer of this, is vouched to me as a worthy and loyal gentleman; He wishes to serve as a volunteer aid to some of our generals, and I am quite willing for him to do so, with any one of them who may see fit to avail himself of his services. A. LINCOLN

[1] ALS, RPB. There is no record of Lathrop's military service. He was from New Jersey and later was a member of the legislature of that state.
