Sec. of State, please see the bearer, Miss Alice Lightner.

April 12, 1862. A. LINCOLN

Annotation

[1]   Ben Bloomfield List DI 2 (1949), No. 98. According to the catalog description Lincoln's note is written on a small card and accompanied by a note from Seward to Stanton, ``The President refers Miss Lightner to me, but you have absorbed my functions. I refer her to you with commendations.'' Miss Lightner's business with Seward and Stanton probably had to do with a state prisoner, and a likely possibility is that the person was A. S. Lightner of Alexander County, Illinois, who had been arrested and released on oath June 23, 1861 (OR, II, II, 35).
