[1] AES, RPB. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from Sherrard Clemens, former member of Congress (1852-1853, 1857-1861), Wheeling, Virginia, March 26, 1862, to Stanton requesting that he ``be allowed to act, (at my own expense) as a volunteer aid, to Genl. McClernand, with whom I served in Congress, or as aid to some other General, who will have command at New Orleans. . . .'' On April 9, Lorenzo Thomas endorsed that ``Mr. Clemens could not, without military rank, act in the capacity of Aide. . . .'' No action was taken by Stanton, and Clemens later served in the Confederate Army.
