R. L. Metcalfe, Surgeon 7th Inf'y. Ills. vols. to be Brigade Surgeon and Lieut Benjamin F. Smith, same Regt. to be Capt and Asst Adjt Genl.'' Benjamin F. Smith was nominated to Cook's staff on April 9 and confirmed by the Senate on April 21. Dr. Richard L. Metcalf remained surgeon of the Seventh Illinois until he resigned on September 15, 1863.
