[1]   AES, Lane Collection, Crawfordsville, Indian A. LINCOLN's endorsement is written on the back of a letter from Henry S. Lane and James A. Wright, March 28, 1862: ``Genl John E Wool Dear Sir the bearer of this letter Col. [James F.] Harney is an excellent Gentleman true & loyal citizen he visits Fortress Monroe in order if possible to forward a letter to a Miss Harris at Bedford Virginia we commend him to your favorable consideration. . . .''

According to a note which accompanies this document, Mary Harris was a kinswoman of Nathan Harris of Indiana, killed in battle. She undertook to escort his body back to Indiana, but being unable to pass through the lines, appealed to James F. Harney for assistance.
