How near to Louisville is Buckner? Is he moving towards Louisville? Has he crossed Green River? Is the bridge over Green River repaired? Can he cross Green River in face of McCook? If he were on the North side of Green River, how long could McCook hold him out of Louisville, holding the railroad with power to destroy it inch by inch? A. LINCOLN

Annotation

[1]   ALS, DLC-McClellan Papers. Lincoln's communication was prompted by a telegram of the same date from the men whom he addressed, reading as follows: ``If Sherman is not promptly reinforced he may meet fate of Lyon in Missouri.

The consequences of such a result you can see.'' (DLC-RTL). A longer telegram received the same day from George D. Prentice estimated Buckner's force as ``four (4) probably six (6) or seven (7) times'' Sherman's. No reply to Lincoln's specific queries is in the Lincoln Papers.
