[1]   AES, IHi. Lincoln's endorsement appears on a letter from Brigadier General John M. Palmer, Camp near New Madrid, Missouri, March 12, 1862, recommending an appointment as quartermaster with the rank of captain for ``Lieutenant John Condit Smith whom you know personally.'' Smith was nominated assistant quartermaster on March 26 and confirmed by the Senate on April 1, 1862.
