Since only one vote of thanks was necessary to return Du Pont to the active list and since Du Pont's appointment as flag officer had received Senate approval on March 6, there was no necessity for a further resolution. A joint resolution passed the House on July 2, however, and was read the first and second time in the Senate before being stopped.
