[1]   ALS, The Rosenbach Company, Philadelphia and New York. The following endorsement is written on the bottom of the letter: ``If Mr Newton can do any thing for Edward Burke, the bearer of this, I will be obliged to him I think him worthy O H BROWNING.'' No further record of Burke's employment has been found until January and February, 1865, when he received $100 for services

as doorkeeper at the White House. Later references to ``Edward McManus'' seem to indicate the same person who was known both as ``Burke'' and ``McManus.'' Presumably Browning's endorsement, added later, was to Isaac Newton, whom Lincoln nominated commissioner of Agriculture on May 16, 1862.
