[1] ALS, owned by John S. Adams, Sr., Wayne, Pennsylvania. There is no reply from Green Adams in the Lincoln Papers, but a letter from Thomas E. Bramlette, Louisville, Kentucky, March 21, 1862, which Adams forwarded to Lincoln, indicated Bramlette's willingness ``to take any position'' and named General James M. Shackelford as willing to raise troops. Colonel W. T. Scott of Lexington was also recommended for provost marshal ``for this district.'' (DLC-RTL). On February 21, 1863, Lincoln nominated Bramlette district attorney for Kentucky, and on January 2, 1863, nominated Shackelford for brigadier general of Volunteers. Bramlette's appointment was confirmed February 27, and Shackelford's on March 11, 1863. Presumably these were among the appointments to which Lincoln refers.
