Dr. Isaac I. Hayes, of Dr. Kane's Arctic expedition, and more recently of an Arctic expedition headed by himself, is an applicant for Brigade Surgeon; and I would like for him to be appointed at once, if consistent with the rules. Yours truly A. LINCOLN

[1]   ALS, DNA WR RG 107, Secretary of War, Personnel Appointments, Box 12. Dr. Isaac I. Hayes sailed in 1853 as surgeon on the second expedition of Elisha K. Kane to the Arctic. From June 9, 1860, to October, 1861, he was on an Arctic expedition of his own. Appointed surgeon of Volunteers April 4, 1862, he served until July 3, 1865.
