Annotation
[1] Angle, p. 289. On February 18, 1862, Governor Newell of New Jersey wrote Lincoln that ``Col. Hatfield is impressed with the belief that I have not faithfully urged his appointment to a Brigadiership with your Excellency chiefly on account of the few words I said to you in relation to Col. Allen. . . . I beg you to write on this note that I have acted in good faith with him, and urged his success to the best of my ability.'' (Ibid.). The officers referred to were probably Colonel James T. Hatfield of the Sixth New Jersey Volunteers who resigned April 27, 1862, and Colonel Joseph W. Allen of the Ninth New Jersey Volunteers, who was drowned at Hatteras Inlet on January 15, 1862, on Burnside's expedition.
