Gen. McClellan, please see the bearer, who, with his Regiment, was forced back from the Burnside Expedition, because of their vessel drawing too much water. They are now at Anapolis, and wish to follow up the Expedition. Can they be provided to do so? Or, what disposition can be made of them? A. LINCOLN

Annotation
[1] ALS, CSmH. General Ambrose E. Burnside's expedition to Hatteras Inlet, North Carolina, sailed January 11, 1862. Colonel Lionel J. D'Epineuil's Fifty---third New York Zouaves assigned to the expedition arrived at Fort Monroe aboard the John Trucks the day after Burnside sailed, but followed immediately. Upon arriving at Hatteras, the John Trucks was found to draw too much water to pass over the bar and was sent back (OR, I, IX, 361---62). D'Epineuil's request could not be fulfilled because the capture of Roanoke Island by Burnside had already been effected February 7---10, and D'Epineuil's regiment was mustered out March 21, 1862, at Washington, D.C.
