[1] AES, IHi. Lincoln's endorsement is written on the back of a letter from Colonel James S. Jackson of the Third Kentucky Cavalry, October 28, 1861, asking that Captain William B. Lane lately resigned from the Third U.S. Cavalry in New Mexico, be permitted to withdraw his resignation and ``. . . take
the place in my Regiment vacated by the appointment of R[ichard] W Johnson Brigadier General.'' A further endorsement by the adjutant general's office, November 5, 1861, declares that permission had already been given to Lane to withdraw his resignation.
