Lane lately resigned from the Third U.S. Cavalry in New Mexico, be permitted to withdraw his resignation and ``. . . take

the place in my Regiment vacated by the appointment of R[ichard] W Johnson Brigadier General.'' A further endorsement by the adjutant general's office, November 5, 1861, declares that permission had already been given to Lane to withdraw his resignation.
