Let Samuel D. Sturgis, of the Regular Army, be appointed a Brigadier General of Volunteers; and, if possible let the appointment take date of August 10th. 1861, corresponding with the battle of Springfield, or Wilson's creek, in which he done a conspicuous & honorable part. Yours truly A. LINCOLN

[1] ALS, owned by Harry G. Golden, Richmond, Indiana. Major Samuel D. Sturgis was nominated to the Senate on January 29 and confirmed on March 5, 1862, his rank of brigadier general dating from August 10, 1861.
