Executive Mansion, January 24, 1862.

My dear Sir: On reflection, I think you better make a peremptory order on the ordnance officer at Pittsburg to ship the ten mortars and two beds to Cairo instantly, and all others as fast as finished, till ordered to stop, reporting each shipment to the department here. Yours truly, A. LINCOLN.

Annotation

[1]   NH, VII, 89. See Lincoln to Foote, January 23, supra. Colonel John Symington, Allegheny Arsenal, telegraphed Lincoln on January 24: ``There is some misapprehension or misrepresentation with regard to the thirteen inch mortar beds. . . twelve beds have been made & forwarded to Hilton Head S.C. under hurried orders from the War Dept two more are now finished & two others will be completed tomorrow in all sixteen. The next order for beds was a telegram from the War Dept dated the 22nd inst directing thirty eight beds to be sent to Cairo III. This order is being pushed forward with all the force that can be applied.'' (DLC-RTL).
