To George B. McClellan1Jump to section
My dear Sir Jan. 22. 1862
Gen. Benham appeals to me to be either assigned, to duty, or given an immediate hearing upon the charges against him. I think this is but reasonable. What say you? Yours truly
A. LINCOLN
Annotation
[1] ALS, DLC-RTL. McClellan replied on the bottom of Lincoln's letter, ``Genl Benham is well aware that his case is under consideration by the Secty of War & myself. . . I would suggest that Genl B be advised to exercise patience.'' On February 11 Benham wrote Lincoln, ``The 'patience' that Gen. McClellan wrote you I 'must have' I have had, not only for these three weeks, but for the nearly three months, that this persecution has existed . . .'' (Ibid.) See also Lincoln to John F. Lee, December 14, 1861, supra.
