Annotation
[1] AES, IHi. Lincoln's endorsements are written on a letter from George Robertson, January 7, 1862, recommending John L. Elbert of Lexington, Kentucky, for some appointment. The letter bears concurring endorsements by John J. Crittenden, Leslie Cowles, and Garrett Davis. Elbert wrote on February 27 that he had failed to see Meigs but had seen Secretary Stanton, who ``said he would let me hear from him.'' (DLC-RTL). There is no record of Elbert's appointment.
