Annotation

[1]   LS, ORB. Written by John Hay and signed by Lincoln, the penmanship of this letter is not clear as to the name of the inventor. The reading ``Knorr's'' is the editors' effort to decipher the name, but no reference to such a man has been found. It seems possible that the name may have been intended as ``Ferriss,'' with reference to a cannon of wrought iron known as the ``Ferriss Gun,'' upon which O.O. Macomber reported to Lincoln on January 28, 1862 (DLC-RTL). No reply from Scott has been found.
