It seems by the accompanying papers that a Brig. Genl. for Cavalry service, is needed; and also in conjunction with the within, that Maj. Davidson is a suitable man. Let him be appointed.

Jan. 8. 1862. A. LINCOLN

Annotation

[1]   AES, IHi. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from Major John W. Davidson of the Second Cavalry to General McClellan, January 6, 1862, asking recommendation for appointment as brigadier general of cavalry. McClellan's undated note, ``Most certainly I say Yes from the bottom of my heart,'' is with the letter, and Cameron's endorsement, ``Let this be done,'' is below Lincoln's. Davidson was appointed brigadier general of Volunteers, February 3, 1862.
