Annotation

[1]   William D. Morley, Inc., Catalog, September 26, 1945, No. 178. According to the catalog description, this is a partial text of an autograph letter signed, on which Meigs wrote his approval. General James Cooper wrote Lincoln January 6 as follows: ``The answer of Gen. Meigs to the note which your Excellency had the kindness to address to him on the subject of the appointment of A. A. Mc-Gaffey, as assistant Qr. Master of my Brigade was a refusal to lend his approval to the appointment. . . on the belief that McGaffey is a gambler. . . .'' (DLC-RTL).

This letter would seem to refer to the same matter, but does not agree with the catalog description of Meigs' endorsement. There is no record of McGaffey's appointment.
