[1]   ALS, owned by Emanuel A. Gardiner, New York City. McClellan endorsed the letter as follows: ``I recommended Col Patterson some time since, & would be glad to have him appointed.'' Lincoln endorsed on the back of the letter: ``Let the appointment be made according to the within. A. Lincoln/Jan. 6. 1862.'' Francis E. Patterson, son of Major General Robert Patterson, was appointed brigadier general of Volunteers, April 11, 1862.
