Annotation

[1]   AES, owned by Stephen M. Adams, Danville, Illinois. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from Brigadier General Ormsby M. Mitchel at Camp Jefferson, Bacon Creek, Kentucky, December 25, 1861, requesting that Joseph J. Slocum be appointed brigade quartermaster and assigned to Mitchel's brigade. Montgomery C. Meigs endorsed on January 16 that no brigade quartermaster was ``at present assignable.'' Slocum was appointed commissary with rank of captain on January 15 and confirmed by the Senate on February 19, 1862, but his assignment to Mitchel's command has not been verified.
