[1] Parke-Bernet Catalog 73, December 6, 1938, No. 133. According to the catalog description, Lincoln's note concerned the case of John Williams, arrested as a spy. Mrs. Cecilia Williams, wife of John Williams, Jr., Norfolk, Virginia, who had been arrested in Boston on orders of General Benjamin F. Butler, arranged for her husband's release on oath and $ 10,000 bond. Seward to John A. Dix, October 31, 1861, ``In answer to your note of the 29th. . . handed to me by Mrs. Williams. . . the U.S. district attorney. . . has been authorized to accept the sureties. . . severally instead of jointly. . . .'' (OR, II, II, 461).
