Brigadier-General Buell, Louisville: January 1, 1862.
General McClellan should not yet be disturbed with business. I think you better get in concert with General Halleck at once. I write you to-night. I also telegraph and write Halleck.
A. LINCOLN.
Annotation
[1] OR, I, VII, 526. See also the telegram and letter to Halleck of this date, infra. The letter which Lincoln promised to write Buell has not been located, but Buell acknowledged its receipt on January 6. Upon receipt of Lincoln's telegram, Buell telegraphed Halleck. Halleck replied on January 2, ``All my available troops are in the field except those at Cairo and Paducah, which are barely sufficient to threaten Columbus, &c. A few weeks hence I hope to be able to render you very material assistance. . . .'' (Ibid., p. 527).
