The President sympathizes deeply with Mrs. Knight & her husband, and the many others in like condition---but he is sure she does not appreciate the difficulty of what she asks.

[1] AD, DLC-RTL. This item is misdated [Feb. ? 1863] in the Lincoln Papers. Although the memorandum is written on a separate sheet of paper, an endorsement written below it in an unidentified handwriting describes the memorandum as an endorsement ``upon the letter of a lady who wished her husband released from jail at Richmond where he is held a prisoner of war. Lt. S R Knight 1st R.I. Regt.'' Mrs. Knight's letter has not been located. Lieutenant Sylvester R. Knight, captured at Bull Run, was exchanged on January 13, 1862, and mustered out of service on January 20, 1862.
