These very ample recommendations are respectfully submitted to the War Department, being quite willing the appointment shall be made if it consistently can. A. LINCOLN

Dec. 31. 1861.

Annotation

[1]   AES, RPB. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from the Maine delegation in congress, December 23, 1861, recommending George W. Wood, formerly of Winthrop, Maine, for appointment to a lieutenancy in the First Infantry Regiment. No appointment for George W. Wood is listed prior to February 23, 1866, when he became second lieutenant in the Eighteenth Infantry.
