Annotation

[1]   The Collector, April, 1950, p. 86. According to the catalog description Lincoln's note is ``addressed to the Provost Marshal.'' The text given is incomplete and probably inaccurate as to the name ``Beilor.'' George C. Bestor, mayor of Peoria, Illinois, in 1853 and state senator in 1858, was probably the person to whom Lincoln gave the card. Colonel Andrew Porter was provost marshal of Washington and the Army of the Potomac, October, 1861 to June, 1862. Concerning Bestor, see Lincoln to Meigs, March 15, 1862, infra.
